What is Tae Kwon Do?
Tae Kwon Do is a form of unarmed combat that has been practiced in the orient for centuries. It has been practiced in it's present form since it was founded in the mid 1950's in Korea. The literal translation of Tae Kwon-Do from Korean is to kick or smash with the foot (Tae), to punch or smash with the fist (Kwon), and the method or way of doing this (Do). The name 'Tae Kwon Do' is therefore an indication in itself of a system of unarmed combat that utilises kicks and punches to defend against one or more attackers.

Tae Kwon Do is more than just learning to fight though, for each grade which the student moves up, they must learn a new pattern (tull in Korean) to progress, learn set sparring techniques (three-step, two-step, one-step), display proficiency in free and semi-free sparring and at later grades perform destruction (board breaking) and demonstrations.

Tae Kwon Do helps students to gain self confidence in themselves, determination, courtesy, self control and of course fitness and balance.
